FEMA National Emergency Training
The Federal Emergency Management Agency administers national emergency training through the Emergency Management Institute. It provides training to emergency management personnel, nationally and abroad. An online independent study program expands learning opportunities to the general public. Training focuses on both proactive and reactive emergency preparedness.

Enrollment

U.S. citizens have priority enrollment status. Foreign applicants may be given consideration when vacancies exist. Students must successfully complete prerequisites, and they may not repeat courses. The application deadline is six weeks prior to the scheduled course.
Location

The main campus for the Emergency Management Institute is at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Courses are also offered through state emergency management agencies. Individuals not able to participate in onsite training may take advantage of the distance learning opportunity provided by the independent study program.

Independent Study

Students can take independent study courses for professional development, as prerequisites for programs held at the Emergency Management Institute or for personal fulfillment. As of 2010, more than 70 courses were available through independent study. Courses are intended to support national emergency preparedness, and there is no cost for qualified participants. A U.S. resident may receive a certificate of completion; college credit is also possible.
Certificate Programs

As of 2010, the Emergency Management Institute offered six programs leading to the issuance of a professional certificate. Certificates were available in the following areas: Advanced Professional Series, Master Exercise Practitioner, Professional Continuity Practitioner, Master Continuity Practitioner, Master Trainer and Professional Development Series. Prerequisites vary for each certificate program.

Featured programs target specific segments of the population. School personnel benefit from courses related to ensuring schools are prepared for emergency situations. Programs are also available in the areas of dam safety, hazardous materials, incident management and earthquake hazards reduction.
