Is Laminate Flooring Water Proof?
Laminate floors are attractive, hard-wearing and more resistant to spills and moisture than solid wood and carpets, but some laminates are more waterproof than others. All laminates will, to some extent, withstand spills but the level of water-resistance is determined by the quality of the laminate and whether it has been treated to be waterproof. The room in which the floor is to be installed is another important consideration. Does this Spark an idea?

Quality
-
The quality and thickness of the laminate may determine its resistance to moisture. Look at the core, which is at the center of the wood. Cores can range from 6 to 12 mm. The more expensive laminates tend to have a thicker core, because they are more stable. A good quality core is also treated to make it more water resistant and to eliminate the swelling that moisture can cause. Check if the laminate has wax embedded in the joints. This protects against water spills and keeps the water from penetrating to the core of the wood.
Waterproof Laminate
-
Waterproof laminate has four layers--three layers that support the structure and a decorative layer. One layer is constructed of melamine, a resilient plastic also used in dinnerware. The core, located in the middle, is fiberboard, made of a high-density material designed to absorb impact. These two, along with the two other layers, make the flooring waterproof.

Kitchen/Bathroom
-
If you want laminate flooring for a kitchen or bathroom, where it may be vulnerable to major spills and exposed to more humidity, it may be sensible to invest in a laminate that is guaranteed to be waterproof. Prior to installation, check the warranty because even some laminates are not recommended for bathroom or kitchen use.
Considerations
-
A family room or bedroom is not likely to incur the same risk of spills as a kitchen, bathroom or dining room. All laminate is fortified against moisture and will withstand occasional spills. Consider whether you really need to pay extra money for a water-resistant laminate in one of these rooms.
Tips
-
You can make your laminate floor more water-resistant by installing a floating floor that locks tightly over your old floor. This locking, with wax or glue, keeps out moisture, preventing the floor from becoming warped over time. Remember that the underlying floor surface should be smooth and even before installing the laminate. If you spill liquid on the floor, wipe it up immediately with a dry cloth, and then remove any stains with a slightly damp cloth.
