Lymphatic massage therapists use a light gentle technique.

Lymphatic massage is a method of manipulating the muscles resulting in relaxation and stress relief. Many massage therapists incorporate this type of massage into their practice. In addition to the tension relief benefits, lymphatic massage is a preventive method of boosting the immune system. Therapists recommend that clients have one or more lymphatic massage sessions prior to flu season or extended travel as a wellness precaution.

  1. History

    • Dr. Emil Vodder, a Danish physician is credited for the development of lymphatic massage. Vodder believed that a hearty flow of lymphatic fluid is necessary for the immune system to flush out waste and toxins from tissues. Massage therapist achieve this by using a light gentle technique. The method of manual lymph drainage (MLD) was introduced in the United States at a conference held in New York in 1972. The Dr. Vodder School opened in 1994 to train therapists in North America.

    Training

    • Depending on the school, the perquisite to earning a certification in the lymphatic techniques requires prior massage training. Research accredited schools if you are just starting out in the field. A high school diploma is needed. Some require prior coursework in science, business and psychology before accepting students into the program. Training courses do vary but count on a range of 600 to 800 hours. Upon graduating, you will need to apply for a license in the state where you wish to practice.

    Vodder Certification

    • Novices or trained massage therapists interested in learning the lymphatic technique should seek accredited training. An accreditation based on Vodder's techniques is a Certified Manual Lymph Drainage Therapist (CMLDT). Training through the Vodder School consists of a five day 160 credit hour program. In addition to learning manual lymph drainage, students are also taught a second method called Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT). A basic course along with three levels of therapy comprise the program. Passing the course earns the designation.

    LANA Certification

    • Students who are Vodder certified are eligible to sit for a national certification exam created by the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA). An important segment of the mission of the non-profit organization was to develop and administer a certification exam to set standards for massage therapists and other medical personnel who work in the field of lymphology. Candidates must also have a valid state license and meet experience and education guidelines to qualify for the exam.

    Recertification

    • To maintain a Vodder certification, it is necessary to attend a school sponsored three day course during each two year period. A LANA certification is valid for a period of six years. Therapists must possess a current state license and either re-take the exam or offer proof of 24 hours in coursework or conference attendance pertaining to the treatment of lymphedema.
