Summer Weather in Bermuda

Summer Weather in Bermuda thumbnail
Bermuda is a former British colony.

Bermuda is a series of small, semi-tropical islands and a former British colony. It is a popular tourist destination that boasts a seaside capital, the city of Hamilton. LonelyPlanet.com reports that Bermuda’s main island is surrounded by coral reef that has “ensnared scores of shipwrecks,” making it the perfect destination for divers. There are many other outdoor activities to pursue in Bermuda’s balmy climate, including kayaking, yachting, snorkeling, hiking and cycling.

  1. Summer Season

    • The summer tourist season, according to LonelyPlanet.com, runs from April through October. During this season, temperatures hover at a steady 85 degrees Fahrenheit and rarely get warmer than that. This is because the Gulf Stream runs between Bermuda and North America and keeps the weather temperate. The water temperature at this time, according to Frommers.com, is about 86 degrees, which, the site claims, is warmer than many inshore and offshore Caribbean waters.

    Humidity

    • LonelyPlanet.com reports that mid-summer can be very humid and muggy, with the average humidity reaching 84 percent in August. While this can be uncomfortable, the abundance of resort pools and beautiful beaches offer quick relief.

    Rain

    • The term “Bermuda High” refers to the island’s sunny days and clear skies. Frommers.com reports that there is no rainy season and that showers are infrequent, quick and heavy, but that they clear quickly.

    Winds and Breezes

    • Once the sun sets in Bermuda, the temperatures drop to a comfortable mid-70s and the evening breezes kick in. The warmest weather is from July through September and this time is sometimes followed by high winds, according to Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. These winds rarely develop into a hurricane, but hurricane season is from June through November. Frommers.com, however, reports that fewer storms hit the coast of Bermuda than hit the U.S. mainland. WorldTravelGuide.net clarifies that most storms pass by the island and result merely in elevated surf.

    What to Wear

    • While summers are certainly balmy in Bermuda and while it is a beach resort destination island, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts advises visitors that there is a conservative dress code that applies to residents and visitors alike. Bare feet, bare chests, swimsuits and other skimpy clothing are considered offensive if worn anywhere other than on the beach.
