The Temperament of Shih Tzu Dogs

The Temperament of Shih Tzu Dogs thumbnail
Shih tzus are popular, cheerful lap dogs.

Shih tzus, also known as lion dogs and chrysanthemum dogs, are small, sturdy lapdogs. They have long hair and come in colors ranging from brown to black, gray, buff and white. Shih tzus stay relatively small at 11 inches tall and 9 to 16 lbs. They have large, expressive eyes, turned up tails, drooping ears and charming personalities. These dogs have been popular as companion dogs since the early 1900s, when they were first brought to the UK.

  1. History

    • According to Dog Breed Info Center, shih tzus have been around since the 16th century. The Chinese monarchy bred these dogs as royal pets and lap dogs, aiming for a sweet, docile personality and manageable size. British citizens began importing the dogs in the early 1900s.

    Personality

    • Shih tzus are lively, alert and curious. They are courageous, friendly and almost always interested in their surroundings. These are very social dogs, who like to be involved in family and community activities. Failing to involve the dogs can lead to depressed shih tzus, or shih tzus who don't socialize with others.

    Training

    • A shih tzu's intelligence and curiosity makes it open to and accepting of training. Use patience and consistency to assure the dog of its place in the household and the correct behaviors. With shih tzus it's very important that training and socialization begins early, as shih tzus that don't learn adequate social skills when they're young may turn shy.

    Drawbacks

    • Behavioral problems in shih tzus include separation anxiety, guarding, growling, snapping and biting. These dogs may be obstinate and bossy, and sometimes exhibit the traditional "small dog" attitude, where they attempt to control their humans in an effort to combat their own diminutive size.

    Conditions

    • Shih tzus have long silky coats, which require regular grooming. Shih tzu owners should include grooming in their dog's list of things to learn; teaching dogs about grooming early avoids future squirming, nipping and discomfort during these mandatory grooming sessions.
