NHTSA Safety Ratings
-
The NHTSA ranks the 2010 Scion xD four out of five stars in frontal crash testing for the driver and front passenger. The xD received the maximum five stars in side crash testing for head injuries, thoracic trauma and pelvis injuries of passengers in the front and rear seats. The NHTSA determined there is a 15 percent chance of rollover in xDs equipped with factory P195/60R16 tires and wheels.
IIHS Frontal Testing
-
The 2010 xD model received an “acceptable” rating in frontal crash testing. The IIHS noted that crash test dummies hit their heads on the roof rail during rebound in front crashes, but there is low risk of severe injuries to head and legs. Injuries to the head are low because accelerated impact at the roof rail is minimal at low and moderate speeds. Intrusion to driver’s area during a crash is minimal. Foot injury risks are low.
IIHS Side Testing
-
Side impact tests gave the Scion xD a “good” rating from the IIHS. There is low risk of severe injuries in low to moderate speeds for the driver and front and rear passengers. Side curtain airbags protect the driver’s head from striking hard interior structures. Passengers' heads also avoid any significant impact due to the side curtain airbags.
IIHS Rear Testing
-
Impact at low and moderate speeds in rear crash protection testing earned the 2010 Scion xD a “good” grade. IIHS reported no threat of serious neck injuries at moderate speeds or slower. However, 2005 to 2010 tC and 2004 to 2006 xB models earned only “marginal” ratings. The marginal ratings are due to these models having poor geometry in seat/head design restraints for taller people, according to the IIHS.
