Camping near the beach is easy in Rockport, which has several RV parks.

Aransas County, Texas, became an art colony in the 1800s and the cities of Rockport-Fulton now boast more than 15 art galleries and 300 artists.



Nearby, the Aransas Wildlife Refuge affords birders a superb opportunity to watch migratory birds, including the world's only migrating flock of whooping cranes.



Anglers can ply both saltwater and fresh water for hundreds of species of fish. Boaters and swimmers will enjoy the same different waters.

  1. Goose Island State Park

    • Goose Island State Park has 102 campsites with water, 20-amp and 30-amp electrical hookups, grills and fire rings. The campground has a dump station, but no laundry, and swimming is not allowed in the park.

      The park has a small grocery store and a playground and the facility is gated. Wi-Fi is available for a fee.

      The waters of the park are bordered by concrete, oyster shells, mud flats and marsh grass perfect for fishing. You can borrow fishing tackle from the park office, but whether you fish in salt or fresh waters, you must have a current Texas fishing license.

    Private RV Parks

    • Beacon RV Park is right on the ocean and offers birding tours, dolphin watching trips and fishing from its own 550-foot pier. Amenities include 30- to 50-amp hookups, pull-through sites for up to 40-foot RVs and cement pads. The park has an activity center, showers, a laundry, cable television and Wi-Fi.

      Lagoons RV Park received a 5W/5W Woodall's rating, the maximum given at Woodalls.com. Ratings are assigned for the park's amenities and the second rating is for the quality of activities the site offers. Lagoons allows pets but has an unspecified breed restriction, so contact management for more information.

      With 300 full RV sites complete with 50-amp electrical hookups and water, campers comfortable with site widths of 26 feet will feel at ease pulling into this park. The park offers cable TV, wireless Internet, a pool, hot tub, metered LP gas, 27 pull-through sites and partial handicapped access. A fishing guide is available.

    Activities

    • Take the 16-mile road tour of Aransas Wildlife Refuge in your car or on foot, visit the interpretive center or observation tower, have a picnic or take a stroll down one of several walking trails to view wildlife up close. Aransas is a popular stopover for migratory birds. Alligators, turtles, frogs and snakes call the refuge home, as do feral hogs, coyote and bobcat.

      Put your boat in the water at any of nearly a dozen marinas in the area. Rockport Beach Park Ramp offers free admission if you are towing a boat, and if you're camping at Sandollar Resort & RV Park, you can use their boat ramp and stop in at the restaurant, too. Fulton Harbor Pier will rent you a pole rental. The pier charges an admission fee.

      Fish for crab, ghost shrimp, grouper, shark, marlin, red drum, several types of bass and catfish and dozens of other species in fresh- or saltwater.

      Swim at Rockport's Blue Wave beach, part of a nationwide campaign to foster voluntary efforts by visitors to clean and maintain beaches. The beach is handicapped accessible, with a picnic site, boat ramp, playground and picnic area and bird sanctuary.

    Festivals

    • There is a festival virtually every month in Rockport. The Gospel Festival is in January, Bountiful Bowl Pottery Fair and Rockport Clay Expo are held in February and the the Fulton Oysterfest is in March.

      Rockport Festival of Wines helps round out Memorial Day Weekend and the Art Festival, Patriotic Boat Parade and Wendell Fireworks Display are all held in July.

      The HummerBird Celebration in September honors the tiny birds that dart around gardens in the area and the Seafair in October celebrates everything ocean.

      In November, enjoy the Rockport Film Festival and if you're still there in December, join in on the Tropical Christmas Celebration

    Climate

    • While daytime highs average in the 90s in July, August and September, the rest of the year weather in Rockport is balmy, with average highs in the 50s in winter. May, September and October see the most rain. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
