From salt to diamonds, crystals are considered transmitters of energy, or the capacity for work or power. The beauty of crystals in the forms of quartz, citrine, tourmaline, fluorite, amethyst and more has been acknowledged for eons, as are the usages of crystals for communication, healing and connecting to the invisible. Crystals can be used for creating balance between inner and outer worlds. Amethyst and other mineral crystals are often used for removing negative energies or kept as a type of talisman for protection. The "energy" of a room can be palpable, particularly after a stormy or angry situation has occurred. Using incense, candles and serene music the room can be instantly "healed", or changed to a better form, thus creating a protective field. Placing crystals like clear quartz in the room amplifies the new harmony, as crystals reflect (and store) what is generated vibrationally. This could be due to the piezoelectric effect. In a study published in the July 1, 2010, edition of "Nature," a team of Dartmouth physicists "used a stream of electrons to cause vibrations in a crystal. . . the first to use quantum particles to influence the behavior of macroscopic objects, marking a major breakthrough in the field of physics."

Amethyst is considered a good crystal for removing unwanted energies. When a person very clearly sets her intentions on something, that "something" can manifest. Some people attribute this to focusing energy, others to wishful thinking, still others to luck. Many lists have circulated detailing what a particular crystal might assist in manifesting, whether healing an illness, helping with mental clarity, or bringing about a positively "charged" atmosphere. A parent employing a group of these rose quartz crystals in her home may discern a new sense of calm in her family. Meditation is often done by gazing upon or holding a favorite crystal. Using pendulums, carrying clear points and laying crystals over parts of the body are various methods for healing.

DNA healing and chakra alignment often employ the use of crystals. Some professional healers and sages refer to crystals as "frozen light." Keeping crystals "clear" or in "good light" is ideal. Any that have been exposed to negative energies or disturbing exchanges can be rinsed in sea water, smudged or set out overnight when the moon's light is very bright. Prayer can be cleansing as well. Any crystals worn regularly are blessed or cleared periodically by persons who are respected as spiritual teachers and leaders. What a person deigns as "true" for the crystal will typically come to imbue its character, no matter how meaningful (or meaningless) to onlookers.

Sacred geometry is utilized sometimes when working with crystals. The chakra system plays a role in crystal usage. A person can choose crystals of the appropriate chakra color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, white or gold for any of the first seven chakras. Selecting the right crystal is totally subjective, unless someone far more experienced in their usage can offer wisdom. Keeping the chakras clear is considered good health, as it keeps the energy field of the physical form in alignment.

Crystals can receive and send energy, or transmit waves and vibration. Spiritual seekers in every path along the road to higher consciousness are ultimately after inner peace, and total harmony -- with themselves, those with whom they relate daily and the world at large. Crystals bring beauty to any space, and extend possibilities across the metaphysical playing field. This has been going on since the days of Plotinus, who held that "the reason in the world and in the rational human mind is only a reflection of a more universal and perfect reality beyond our limited human reason."
