Certification is required to practice therapeutic massage in Indiana.

Certification from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) is required for practice in over 37 states, including Indiana. Certification is considered a seal of excellence in the field of massage therapy. It serves as a guarantee to potential clients that they are in the hands of a skilled practitioner.

  1. Application Process

    • In order to become a massage therapist in Indiana, an application must be submitted to the State Board of Massage Therapy. The Internet is the preferred means of communication, so an email address must be included with the application. Any information submitted must be accurate, as any omission or misrepresentation of information could result in legal charges. An application fee costs $100 as of 2010.

    Qualification

    • A few basic requirements are necessary to qualify for certification. The applicant must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. He or she must have successfully completed training (including the required 500 hours of supervised classroom and hands on instruction) at a massage therapy school in good standing with any state, regional or national government agency charged with regulating massage therapy schools

    Background Information

    • The applicant must provide proof of professional liability insurance and any history of criminal convictions, including any convictions related to the practice of the profession. The board will deny an application for certification if the applicant has been convicted of prostitution, rape or sexual misconduct or is a registered sex offender.

    Certification By Endorsement

    • The board may grant certification by endorsement to an applicant who is certified and in good standing in a state having standards that are at least as strict as the standards in Indiana, as long as the applicant pays the applicable $100 fee. The state of Indiana accepts results from other nationally recognized certification boards, so its standards are similar to those of most other states. The previous state will be asked to provide the board with the applicant’s current status and criminal record.

    Certification Renewal

    • A certification issued by the board is valid for four years. The renewal fee as of 2010 is $150 for four years. If the certification expires and the applicant fails to renew it in time, the board can charge a reinstatement fee.
