Baptist Church Job Descriptions

A church groundskeeper takes care of daily tasks needed for property upkeep.

Depending on congregation size, Baptist churches can staff one or dozens of employees. Many more work in volunteer capacities, usually on Sundays or during services, but sometimes throughout the week as well. All of the paid and unpaid staff work together, usually under the supervision of the senior pastor.

Office Support Staff

Office staff support church pastors and keep the business side of the church running. The church office may be the first point of contact for many visitors and community members. The office needs effective workers who work well with pastors and other staff members and can coordinate church events. These positions include a church administrator, office manager, receptionist, treasurer or financial operator, administrative assistant and bookkeeper.

Maintenance

Church maintenance personnel fall into several categories, including janitors, groundsmen, custodians and repair personnel. All of these provide for the general maintenance and upkeep of church facilities. At times, outside contractors provide services for work which cannot be done in-house. The maintenance staff size and pay depends largely on the needs of the congregation, and sometimes volunteers serve the church by attending to simple maintenance and janitorial duties.

Musicians

In many Baptist churches, the choir director and musicians are paid personnel who work with the head pastor. The choir director chooses music, with the pastor's approval, and organizes the musicians and the church instruments. Musicians, including vocalists or band members, may also help select music and perform songs during services.

Associate Pastors

Associate pastors fulfill a variety of roles including community outreach, youth and children's ministry, marriage ministry, and counseling. Some churches have only one associate pastor while others may have several who work in specific capacities. In any case, her main role is to support the senior pastor in the vision of the church and cooperate with him as they lead the congregation.

Senior Pastor

The head or senior pastor directs the entire church. He presents the mission, strategy, purpose and values of the church to the staff and congregation. He leads the congregation and other staff members to promote the well-being of the church. His roles include but are not limited to preaching, teaching, leading, planning, supervising and evaluating.

Volunteers

Church volunteers form the foundation of most Baptist church congregations. A few examples include greeters, ushers, Sunday school teachers and superintendents, nursery workers, outreach workers, librarian, historian and webmaster. Most churches cannot meet the needs of the congregation without the assistance of dependable volunteers.
