Hotel Housekeeping Supervisor Job Description

Save

In commercial buildings like hotels, which require a vast number of rooms to be cleaned and stocked in short time periods, housekeeping supervisors ensure these rooms are turned over quickly and efficiently. Responsible for hiring and managing the housekeeping staff, these supervisors must ensure that the housekeepers' work is accurate and up to the standards of the hotel.

Experience

  • Housekeeping supervisors must have at least a high school diploma. To reach the supervisor level, housekeeping supervisors may need some college education or a degree. This is especially important for hotels. Many hotels require these supervisors to be members of International Executive Housekeepers Associations, which offers Certified Executive Housekeeper and Registered Executive Housekeeper certifications.

Skills

  • Housekeeping supervisors must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. They must be well-organized and patient.

Responsibilities

  • Housekeeping supervisors must hire potential housekeepers. They review applications and interview desirable candidates. They must then train new housekeepers on the variety of tasks that must be completed.

These supervisors must ensure housekeepers’ work has been completed by entering each room to review the work. Supervisors then check which housekeeper cleaned which room and assign them to make the beds differently or clean the shower more thoroughly. Supervisors may also check the inventory of complementary items, such as soap and towels, to be sure the housekeeper refilled everything. These supervisors are responsible for maintaining inventory as well. They may deliver ironing boards and cribs to rooms upon request. Some housekeeping supervisors may have cleaning responsibilities.

These supervisors schedule housekeepers and assign rooms and tasks to each. They control the supplies on hand to ensure enough cleaning supplies are available for cleaning the hotel rooms.

Supervisors recommend which housekeepers deserve promotions or raises, as well as dismissals.

Compensation

  • According to PayScale in 2010, housekeeping supervisors made between $23,055 and $34,459 annually. Salary ranges are based on the hotel, location, and responsibilities.

Work Environment

  • Housekeeper supervisors work indoors. Their cleaning responsibilities may require physical labor and the use of cleaning chemicals. Administrative duties may require them to sit at a computer for extended periods.
