How Does a Hayward Pool Filter Work?

Hayward filters for clean pool water

Hayward manufactures three types of filtration systems: DE (diatomaceous earth), sand and cartridge filters. They each work differently but achieve the same goals. Because Hayward produces such a high-quality product, if you take proper care of your pool filter, it will provide clear, clean pool water for many years to come. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Diatomaceous Earth Filters

    • The filtration system in some of Hayward’s DE filters looks like very long thin fingers. There are approximately 70 or so fingers of 18 inches in length which are coated with Diatomaceous earth. The water passes through the finger filtration system allowing the smallest of dirt particles (as small as 1 micron) to get caught in the layer of DE. Over time the fingers and the DE become dirty and so require a backwash or thorough cleaning. A thorough cleaning includes removing the old DE and replacing it.

    Hayward Sand Filters

    • Hayward’s sand filters clean by forcing the pool's water to flow through a layer of sand which catches the dirt particles. Although the sand doesn’t catch particles as small as a DE filter would, this filter can remove dirt particles that are 20 to 40 microns in size. As with a DE filter, over time, the sand must be cleaned via backwashing. Sand filters can adequately clean pools without having to change the sand for several years. Backwashing the filter every few weeks is sufficient for clean pool water.

    Cartridge Filtration Systems

    • The cartridge filter is the least expensive of the Hayward product line. The beauty of cartridge filters is that there’s no need to add sand or earth to the filtration system. The cartridge does the work of pulling the dirt from the water. Instead of backwashing the sand or adding new earth, all you have to do with a cartridge is remove it from the filter and hose it off; after is has been cleaned it is ready to get back to work. Replace the cartridge every few years, depending on use. Replacing a cartridge is more expensive than replacing sand or diatomaceous earth.

    Pool Pumps & Motors

    • All filtration systems require a pump and motor to work. The Hayward motor causes the pump to draw the dirty water from the pool and pushes it through the filtration system for cleaning. The filtration system then returns the clean water back to the pool.

    Choosing a Hayward Filter

    • No matter which type of filter you choose, you can rest assured that the Hayward filter will get your pool clean. You just have to decide which filtration system you feel most comfortable with.
