Junior Network Administrator Job Description


Junior network administrators are responsible for setting up and carrying out regular maintenance on computer networks. Companies require efficient systems that enhance the flow of information. The establishment of computer networks requires competent junior network administrators who are able to design both internal and external networks. This career field is subject to various policies and guidelines that professionals are expected to adhere to as they perform their duties.


  • A junior network administrator should have a bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or mathematics. A junior network administrator also requires up to five years of experience. Experience can be gained through internships while still in college, especially as computer network administrators.


  • It is not required for a junior network administrator to be certified, but it is important that he gets certification for better job prospects and career advancement. Some of the certifications he can get include Cisco Certified Network Associate, Citrix Certified Administrator, Security Certified Network Associate, Novell Certified Network Architect and Linux Professional Institute of Certification.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • A junior network administrator is required to design and help build up computer network systems. Junior network administrators also maintain computer networks in an organization. When there is a problem in the system, a junior network administrator is expected to troubleshoot and provide timely solutions. A junior network administrator installs and continually improves computer equipment. A junior network administrator is supervised by a senior administrator to ensure that established network systems are consistently improved.

  • A junior network administrator should be a team player, easy to work with, organized, self-motivated and time-conscious. He should be critical and analytical. He should be able to communicate effectively with other team members. He should be result oriented and committed to his work. He should have a thorough understanding of computer systems. The junior network administrator should be flexible and understand what is involved in the administration and maintenance of network connectivity. Junior network administrators should be innovative and creative.
