Job Description for a Plant Supervisor


According to the Michigan Civil service Commission, a plant supervisor has the overall responsibilities of supervising and monitoring the plant. He directs the work of junior operators in the plant. In addition, he exercises a lot of authority and can be called upon to make a decision at the spur of the moment. Additionally, his role includes ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in his defined role.


  • A plant supervisor needs to at least have a high school diploma. Prior working experience in a supervisory role will be an added advantage. A plant supervisor will require to earn at least five certifications credits at least every three years. Three certifications come from being employed in a plant continuously. The other certifications will come from attending seminars and workshops that have been organized professionally. An example of an organization that offers certification includes Association for Facilities Engineering.


  • He ensures that all the equipment are in proper working order. He also writes reports, maintains records and ensures staff development. He schedules work assignments for the junior employees and coordinates their work. He is actively involved in ensuring that employees get to work in a safe environment by monitoring how work is carried out and ensuring that the company adheres to local government regulations on health and safety. He ensures that all terminations and/or promotions for employees are fair and procedural.


  • A competent plant supervisor acts as the bridge between the senior management and junior-level employees. He displays versatility, openness and maturity in his relationships. He is a confidante to the employees, as he is the person who can listen to the grievances of the employees. He has the responsibility of remaining neutral in such instances and has the fiduciary duty not to breach information given to him in confidence.

Desirable Skills

  • He should have a strong background in maths and physics. He should be able to display good leadership qualities and problem-solving skills. This is because most of the time, he will be in charge of a group of employees and should be able to resolve any issue that comes up. He should be self-driven and have the capacity to bring in desired results. He should have good interpersonal skills as well.
