FedEx couriers deliver and pickup packages.

Couriers maintain the commitment of delivering and picking up packages along with providing exceptional customer service. FedEx couriers will assist customers face-to-face and over the telephone concerning packages and other FedEx services. All of the rules assigned by FedEx involving the vehicle, delivery and pickup method, and other FedEx services, are upheld by the courier at all times.

  1. Packages

    • The ability to lift heavy boxes, up to 70 pounds, and move boxes that weigh over 150 pounds with equipment should be feasible for a FedEx courier. He must have previous knowledge of using a forklift or having a forklift license as using a forklift to move a heavy package is often required. At times, couriers may handle hazardous packages and will need to exhibit proper precautions and care. Whether moving it by hand or forklift, the courier should follow specific instructions concerning the package.

    Sorting

    • Couriers will sort packages in accordance to drop off points and the route taken. Employees load the vehicle with packages for delivery in the area he is assigned. These boxes and other parcels will need proper arrangement to ensure the safety of the vehicle and packages. Couriers must also arrange packages to fit the amount of packages he will be delivering during his trip. Placing packages to allow enough room to retrieve the package is an important step to sorting and loading the truck.

    Driving

    • FedEx couriers operate vehicles, usually large trucks, while transporting, delivering, and picking up packages. FedEx couriers must maintain a valid driver’s license in order to operate FedEx vehicles and equipment. There must be no accidents within the last year and the courier must keep a clean driving record. Many courier positions require the applicant has prior experience, usually two years or more, to carry out the responsibilities of a FedEx courier.

    Delivery

    • The courier must be knowledgeable of routes and shortcuts to deliver FedEx packages. These packages need to be unloaded while the courier makes frequent stops at drop off points of business and residential homes. Signatures are sometimes required delivering a package, or a FedEx note or the package itself is left when the recipient is not at home. The delivery time, location, and recipient is often recorded by the courier for tracking purposes.

    Communication

    • Good communication is needed to verify the delivery of the package or when speaking to the customer to obtain directions. The courier must speak English in order to deliver packages for FedEx within the United States. If the courier’s native language is not English, he must first pass a test to determine his English writing, reading, and speaking skills. Sometimes there will be special instructions for packages, such as the location to drop off the package. The courier must understand the directions, remember them, and carry these instructions out.
