An auto detailer cleans new and used vehicles with a variety of methods. A detailer may work at a car wash, auto service shop, auto repair shop, or a car dealership. Auto detailers may also be responsible for identifying car damage and fixing minor problems. This job is sometimes used to start a career in the automotive industry.

Education

  • The only formal education requirement for most auto detailer jobs is a high school diploma. Detailer training is done on-the-job and auto detailers are shown how to use detailing equipment. An interest in automobiles and basic repair knowledge is helpful but not required to be an auto detailer.

Duties

  • The duties of an auto detailer mostly concern cleaning the car. An auto detailer uses specialized cleaners and equipments for each area he needs to clean. Typically a detailer cleans all areas of the car, including the interior and under the hood. A detailer also does small touch up work on the car, including minor repairs and painting.

Work Environment

  • Most of the time, an auto detailer is working in and around the car. He may clean the car in a garage or outside in a lot. Safety precautions must be followed to minimize the health impact of working around toxic cleaning chemicals. Ear protection may also be required due to working with vacuums, buffers, and other loud equipment.

Salary

  • Most auto detailers are paid an hourly wage. Occupation Net reports that the average hourly wage in 2009 is $9.47. Salary based auto detailers typically made $19,690 per year.

Job Prospects

  • The prospective growth of the auto detailing industry is not expected to change greatly. Currently 349,000 employees work in the automotive detailing job.
