    • A human resource consultant performs a variety of human resource tasks that vary according to specific industry. A human resource consultant is “responsible for assisting clients with strategically integrating effective HR processes, programs and practices into their daily operations.” A human resource consultant can also be defined as the individual responsible for matching suitable job applicants with employers.

    Responsibilities

    • Human resource consultants employed by businesses or organizations may be responsible for ensuring that a company’s practices are in accordance with human resource policies and labor laws. A human resource consultant employed by Oregon’s Department of Administrative Services provides consultations with company managers and training for human resource managers. A human resource consultant involved in employment services must interact with job applicants and act as a liaison between job applicants and employers. This type of human resource consultant is responsible for obtaining up-to-date job information from employers and maintaining communication with applicants.

    Qualifications

    • A human resource consultant should be knowledgeable of human resource laws and practices, be computer literate and be an effective communicator. Knowledge of employee training techniques, analytical skills and governmental policies is also beneficial. This is a very people-oriented career, so an aspiring human resource consultant should be comfortable engaging with people on a daily basis.

    Education

    • A human resource position requires a bachelor’s degree in human resources or a related field. Additional schooling or training may be required for human resource consultants with a large number of responsibilities. When choosing an academic path, consider choosing courses that are related to the industry you wish to enter.

    Work Environment

    • A human resource consultant may interact with individuals in person or over the Internet, and most likely works primarily in an office setting. However, some human resource consultants may be required to do extensive traveling to career fairs or college campuses.

    Salary

    • As of July 2010, Career Builder’s salary calculator lists the average salary for a human resource consultant working in the United States as $73,865 per year. A human resource consultant’s salary may be significantly more or less than the listed average salary depending on her experience, bonuses, benefits, hiring industry, the location of her employer, or periodic raises compared to her starting salary.

    Considerations

    • Since human resource consultants can have such different job responsibilities, carefully research the requirements of a human research job before submitting your application. The knowledge, skills and abilities required for one position may not be transferable to the next.
