Strategy consultants are important for businesses that need a fresh perspective on an operational issue or communication issue. The consultant is usually part of a separate management consultant company and hired for a short period of time by another company. The job requires someone with great communication, public relations and business skills.
Consultants need to be great at written communication. Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite is usually required. Consultants must be able to create documents such as presentations, press releases and memos.
Salary and Education
Many strategy consultants have a bachelor’s degree in communications, business or marketing; a master’s degree in any of these areas is a plus. The job requires managing many people. Strategy consultants are good at staying organized and solving problems quickly. Internships with consulting firms are a good introduction to the job.
Consultants who work with technology or media companies should be familiar with the software and issues specific to this industry. If they are working for a social media company, they should have experience with other social media platforms such as blogs and Twitter. The more consultants know about Web design, software development and other technical issues, the more they can do for their clients.
Project Management Skills
Since strategy consultants often work on specific projects for clients, they must be excellent at managing projects. This requires tracking a project’s progress, conducting productive meetings, solving interpersonal team member issues and using software such as Microsoft Project for scheduling.
Since strategy consultants’ work usually affects many departments, the consultants must work well with others. Consultants must be ready to discuss a project with departmental heads and get their input. They should be familiar with each relevant department’s terminology.
