Fishing is allowed at piers in Naples.

Anglers have plenty of fishing options in Florida, including lakes, rivers, canals, the Gulf and the ocean. All bodies of water are filled with opportunities to fish from piers for tarpon, snook, redfish, grouper, snapper and king mackerel.

  1. Types of Fishing Licenses

    • There are two main types of fishing licenses in the state of Florida; fresh water and salt water. Each license has a variety of sub-categories, including use of a boat and commercial fishing.

The fresh water fishing license is valid for any fishing from a pier over an inland body of water, including rivers, canals, and lakes. The salt-water fishing license is valid for fishing from a pier that reaches out into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico.

    Required License

    • Some places that rent fishing equipment have a fishing license for fishing from their pier. A majority of the time, these locations are found near lakes and at many inlets along the Gulf of Mexico. If renting equipment and fishing from one of these sites, there is no fishing license required.

When not fishing at one of these locations, it is required to have a fishing license to fish from shore or an affixed structure, such as a pier. The fresh water and salt-water licenses work for this type of fishing, with no extras. As of 2010, the cost for these licenses range from $10 for fresh water to $20 for salt-water for Florida residents. If not a Florida resident the cost for the license will be higher, including an out-of-state fee.

    Fishing Equipment Allowed to Use

    • Florida puts regulations on how to fish from piers and which equipment is and is not allowed. When fishing from a pier, traditional rods, reels, and bait are required. The use of nets, tarps, gigs, spears, or manually gathering fish with hands is prohibited. Items that are not allowed are listed on the permit when purchased.

    No Need for License

    • Not everyone is required to have a fishing license when fishing from a pier. Florida residents under the age of 16 and over the age of 65 are not required to have a fishing license to fish from a pier. Also, those fishing in their county of homestead residency are not required to have a fishing license.

Active military personnel who are on home leave in Florida do not have to have a fishing license either.

    Where to Purchase License

    • All fishing licenses are available through the Fish and Wildlife Department, but can also be purchased at several locations throughout Naples.

A license can be purchased at the Collier County’s Tax Collectors office or at any K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Sports Authority, Sunshine Ace Hardware and select bait and tackle shops in the area.
