Job Description for a Business Operations Analyst


A business operations analyst has a broad responsibility. The individual must analyze the entire organizational process of a company, ranging from management, operations and production, to determine whether the strategic plan set forth by executive management is followed along with policies and procedures. The analyst studies trends within a company that affect productivity and profitability, and monitors business intelligence information. A business operations analyst is closely related to the occupation of quality assurance analyst or quality assurance auditor.

General Duties

  • A business operations analyst works out of an office. The analyst typically works 40 hours a week. The duties include creating a system to audit different processes of a company or business. This is usually accomplished by creating audit or compliance reviews of each department based on managerial guidelines. For example, the business operations analyst may have a schedule in which she spends a week or two examining the efficiency of a financial management branch. To measure efficiency, the business operations analyst uses measurements for her particular department based on what was stated in the strategic plans created by executive management.


  • A business operations analyst should possess skills in research, audit and problem solving. The position requires an individual who can use logic when reviewing all business processes. The individual must be able to plan and coordinate scheduled review with managers of various departments. A business operations analyst also needs to know the latest procedures for determining the effectiveness of business operations and must be able to communicate to management through superior written and oral communicative skills. Software skills are a must, especially software that provides statistical analysis of a business process. A business analyst must also be able to recognize positive or negative trends concerning the effects of production on a business.


  • According to PayScale, the annual median salary for a business operations analyst with five to nine years of experience is $56,189 to $78,176 as of 2010. Business operations analyst jobs are typically found in big cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia, San Diego and Minneapolis.

Employment Outlook

  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011, industries pertaining to managerial analyst are expected to grow by 24 percent from 2008 to 2018. A business operations analyst would be considered a management analyst by industry standards and is a part of the projected growth path.

Educational Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in business or business administration meets the requirement for a business operations analyst. A college student seeking a career as a business operations analyst should also consider taking courses in math, computer science, information systems and statistics.
