Limewire Connection Problems
Limewire is a peer-to-peer connection program that allows users to connect to a network and share files with each other. Limewire is not a service connected to the Internet; instead it operates on the Gnutella network. All of the content available on Limewire is provided by the users. Connecting problems can sometimes occur with the Limewire network.
-
Firewall
-
Many firewall programs and antivirus programs are not programmed to accept the Limewire network. If connection is blocked by the firewall the settings need to be changed to set Limewire as an exception and allow connection. Virus programs allow specific functions or sites to be set as safe and to allow connection. For assistance with how to change the settings of the firewall or antivirus program contact the customer service department of the program manufacturer.
Third Party Security
-
Third-party security programs may be programmed to block the port that Limewire uses to connect to the Gnutella network. The third-party program is installed on the computer at the manufacturer and will need to be disabled to get Limewire to work. If the firewall and antivirus programs have already been adjusted to allow for Limewire to connect contact, the customer service department of the computer manufacturer and inquire of any hidden security programs that are loaded and how to adjust them.
-
Uninstall
-
Once the firewall and other security programs have been adjusted to allow for the Limewire connection, it may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall the Limeware software to get the changes to take effect. This is a simple process that can be completed in the control panel screen of the computer. It is important, however, that Limewire is completely shut down before beginning the uninstall process including the taskbar and the system tray at the bottom right corner of the screen. If Limewire is not shut down completely the uninstall process won’t be effective.
Peer-to-Peer Connection
-
If connection is still not possible after the firewall, antivirus program and security programs have all been adjusted and Limeware reinstalled it is necessary to contact your ISP. The ISP may be blocking peer-to-peer connections. While some ISPs will make exceptions for Limewire, others have rules against allowing peer-to-peer connections.
Router
-
Wireless routers also have a firewall that will need to be configured to allow for Limewire to connect. This is a common problem when trying to connect from a home computer with a wireless router. It may be necessary to contact your ISP for directions on how to configure the router correctly.
