Titanium and stainless steel are becoming increasingly popular among the jewelry world. Both less expensive than gold, silver or platinum, it is no surprise the two metals are being used as alternatives for jewelry. People are looking for jewelry that will stand the test of time, after wearing such items day after day, which is why titanium and stainless steel are the new candidates.

Titanium is an extremely strong yet lightweight metal. It is used by engineers to create space crafts, ships and architectural structures. It is durable since it does not corrode, and will not tarnish nearly as easily as gold, silver or platinum. Also unlike other jewelry materials, titanium does not cause skin allergies.

Similar to titanium, stainless steel does not corrode; it is durable and will not tarnish. Many kitchen appliances and surfaces are now being made out of stainless steel. It is also used in hospitals, and tattoo shops for piercings, known as surgical stainless steel. Many known monuments and structures are made out of stainless steel, such as St. Louis's Gateway Arch.

Titanium and stainless steel have many similarities. They look similar in color, and both are durable and will not corrode or tarnish. Both also look just as good as silver or gold when brushed and polished, and can have diamonds and other gem stones set in them.

Differences

One difference between titanium and stainless steel is that it is possible for some people to have an allergic reaction to stainless steel; its composition is slightly different than titanium. The other difference is the color; both are silvery metals, but titanium can be somewhat darker.

Cost

Titanium is more expensive than stainless steel; this is because the process of attaining titanium is more costly. A titanium ring could cost somewhere around $300, whereas stainless steel could cost about $20. The cost also depends on the diamonds or other gem stones you may decide to put into the metal.
