Business operations professionals plan, coordinate and oversee the operations of their company and work closely with other management professionals to ensure that business processes meet the needs and objectives of the organization.

Function

  • Professionals in business operations coordinate and facilitate the technologies, people and processes that relate to the manufacturing, marketing and delivery of products and services. Some duties that fall under business operations include coordinating projects related to the design and packaging of goods, supervising quality control and management procedures and managing the logistics of different departments and external vendors involved in the production process. Some business operations employees generate reports that track financial and operational performance, and they create business plans and budget templates for management.

Education

  • Since most business operations roles are filled by experienced professionals or top executives, a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree are usually required. To prepare for handling tasks that span the different functions in an organization, students take courses in management, business operations, accounting, finance, marketing and economics.

Skills

  • Candidates should have excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Business operations professionals must be analytical, organized and good problem solvers. Companies look for professionals with strong leadership, strategic planning and decision-making abilities. Other qualifications that are helpful include proficiency in word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software, and the ability to navigate and network with different departments in an organization.

Salary

  • PayScale reports that average salaries for business operations managers in the United States ranged between $46,253 and $80,316 as of July 2010. Average bonuses for the positions fell between $2,023 and $10,099. The average total pay for business operations managers, which included bonuses, profit sharing and commission rates, ranged from $45,736 and $84,917 per year.

Potential

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) “Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition” states that general and operations managers will not experience job growth between 2008 and 2018. Since business operations managers occupy senior-level positions across different industries, employment levels will depend on performance within the sector. The BLS projects that most job openings will occur in the healthcare industry.
