Learning consultants are also called educational consultants, instructional coaches or curriculum specialists. They either work for school districts, educational businesses or as independent contractors. Learning consultants possess vast knowledge concerning educational theories, education research and educational programs. Educational consultants in the U.S. earn an average annual salary of about $87,000, according to Salary.com.

Education and Skills

  • Most learning consultant positions require a bachelor's degree in education with preference given to applicants with a master's in education. They must be able to use computers proficiently so they can conduct research, create documents and presentations and track data.

Experience

  • Educational consultants typically worked as teachers and/or researchers. Most hiring entities require several years experience in some educational field.

Employed Consultants

  • The duties of a learning consultant may vary, depending on the type of agency or business. Learning consultants working for school districts may choose new textbooks, plan curriculum and evaluate academic programs. They may also help implement technology into the classroom. Learning consultants may spend much of their time researching effective teaching strategies and helping teachers improve instruction.

Independent Consultants

  • Some learning or educational consultants work in private practices. Independent consultants often provide services to families seeking help to make educational decisions for their children. Educational consultants may help parents select the best private school to meet the special needs of their children. Special needs may include learning disabilities, behavioral disorders and other factors which may impact the child's learning. Also, educational consultants may help with college and career planning.

Training

  • Successful learning consultants often complete specialized training because they know employers and clients typically prefer consultants with this extra background. The Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) offers an annual Summer Training Institute for new and prospective learning consultants. Also, the IECE endorses the Independent Educational Consultant certificate which the University of California offers.
