SkyWest Airlines is considered North America’s largest regional airline serving the United States, Mexico and Canada. In recent history, SkyWest has been better known for its smaller commercial jets, chartering services and multiple news-worthy airplane malfunctions. A SWOT analysis of SkyWest Airlines provides an outline of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the airline. SWOT analyses are often commissioned by management to assess problem areas, new ventures and current operations.

Strengths

SkyWest’s SWOT analysis’ strengths feature the inside components of the airline that are high-functioning. The inside components of the airline should be areas of operation the airline can control or adjust if needed. For example, SkyWest’s strengths could include long-term fuel contracts, high on-time arrival rates, decreased booking and baggage fees and multiple primary hub locations.

Weaknesses

SkyWest’s SWOT analysis’ weaknesses feature the inside components of the airline that are in significant need of improvement. The inside components of the airline should be areas of operation the airline can control or adjust if needed. For example, SkyWest’s weaknesses could include increased multiple-stop destinations, minimal flight attendants per flight, increased plane turnaround times and short-term union contracts.

Opportunities

SkyWest’s SWOT analysis’ opportunities feature outside components of the airline where the airline has potential room to grow. The outside components of the airline should be areas of operation the airline cannot control. For example, SkyWest’s opportunities could include seasonal rises in travel, larger manufactured planes, a decrease in the price of fuel and increases in the cost of other methods of transportation, such as cars and trains.

Threats

SkyWest’s SWOT analysis’ threats feature components of the airline where the airline has the potential to be impaired or harmed. The external components of the airline should be areas of operation the airline cannot control. External components of the airline can also be environmental, competitor or governmental factors affecting the airline’s operations and activities. For example, SkyWest’s threats could include long-term declines in traveling, hurricane season, stricter boarding security regulations and relocation of competitor primary and secondary hubs.

SkyWest’s SWOT analysis will contain four information-filled boxes inside a two-by-two chart. Each box will represent one of the four categories: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. With the strengths and weaknesses in the top two boxes, from left to right, respectively, the bottom two boxes will contain opportunities and threats, also from left to right, respectively.
