History
-
Thetford has pioneered the development of camping toilets since the 1960s. In 1964, it introduced the first low-profile toilet for RV campers, as well as the first permanent toilet model for RV campers. Within two years, in 1966, Thetford created a low-water use toilet to more adequately meet the needs of travelers. During the 1970s, Thetford introduced innovations such as the first plastic camper toilet, non-splash holding tank and electric flush portable toilet. Since the 1980s, Thetford has focused on developing new technology and upgrades to existing toilet models, as well as providing a more convenient and environmentally-friendly way to dispose of camper toilet waste. These attentions to small details is one of the reasons why Thetford continues to lead the industry field.
Permanent Toilets
-
Thetford offers two primary categories of toilets: permanent and portable. Permanent toilets are designed to fit RV campers, marine vessels or a hybrid design known as cassette toilets. RV camper toilets are generally designed for comfort, while marine toilets emphasize a premium on water-preservation. Permanent cassette toilets offer the comfort of RV camper toilets, but can be conveniently fit into smaller spaces like a portable or marine toilet. The seat of a cassette toilet pivots on the permanent frame to minimize its storage size, which can then be rotated again to full-size during use.

Portable Toilets
-
Thetford's focus on portable toilets is to provide the camper with a sanitary option when permanent toilets are not plausible. For example, many permanent camper toilets rely upon electricity to function. However, in some cases either a campsite has no power or in the event of a storm, the camper may lose power altogether. In these situations, a portable toilet allows the campers an option that does not require electricity to flush the waste. Portable toilets are specifically designed to be sanitary and compartmentalized for easy assembly and cleaning. Portable toilets also give the camper the flexibility to use when tent-camping or boating on a lake.
Options
-
Thetford directs its development resources to the convenience of its customers. Once such feature is the availability of multiple flush option toilets. On the low-end of the product line, Thetford offers toilets that include both a manual hand flush and pedal flush option. Most middle-tier products also feature the pedal flush option, but a high-end alternative is available. In the most expensive line of Thetford camper toilets is the electric push-button flush. While a pedal flush allows a camper a hands-free option for cleanliness and convenience, the push-button flush reduces the chances of a broken flapper and provides a more powerful flush option.
Cleaning
-
A major concern when considering a camper toilet is the ability to keep it sanitary and clean. Thetford designs all of their products for easy maintenance and also sells a special line of accessories to make cleaning especially effortless. In addition to holding tank deodorizing and cleaning products, Thetford also sells an eco-friendly line of products that are designed to break down toilet paper waste for easier disposal and have less of an impact on the environment.
