Funding for Youth Sports

Youth sports leagues are always in need of funding to allow kids to play the games they love.

Youth sports provide an outlet for kids to learn about different sports, exercise their bodies and learn social skills. Most youth sports organizations are run entirely by volunteers who try to make the leagues work with limited financial resources. To meet the primary responsibility of providing a safe environment for these young people, youth sports leagues are always in need of new funding sources to provide proper facilities and equipment for young athletes.

  1. Player Fees

    • One of the primary funding sources for youth sports leagues is the players' families themselves. Almost every youth sports league requires a registration fee for every youngster who wishes to play. The boards that manage these organizations spend considerable time looking for alternate funding sources in order to minimize the costs individual players and their families must pay. Some families are unable to pay even a small fee, and many leagues allow those players to participate in some sort of scholarship program.

    Grants

    • Many large corporations have programs that offer grants to youth sports teams and leagues. Both professional sports leagues and companies such as Nike, Adidas and Microsoft are heavily invested in youth leagues and allow leagues or teams to apply for grant money that is available for large projects, like upgrading or building fields or acquiring equipment that is needed to keep the league running in a safe environment.

    Local Sponsorships

    • Youth sports leagues spend a lot of time out in their local communities, drumming up support. Small and large businesses donate money, from as little as $100 up to thousands of dollars on an annual basis to help leagues with their operating expenses. These sponsors get their name on jerseys or banners or walls to build community awareness for their business while helping leagues to offset some costs.

    Snack Bars

    • Many youth sports leagues supplement the money they are able to collect from businesses with funds they earn by operating a snack bar. Some leagues are able to get local businesses to donate supplies; others have to pay for them. But either way, running a snack bar is another way to bring funds into a league. Many organizations also create a line of T-shirts or mugs that bear the name and logo of the league, then sell them to help raise money.

    Fundraising Programs

    • Selling things like candy or wrapping paper is another source of funding for youth sports. Private companies offer programs to sports leagues that allow the league to keep a percentage of the money that is raised selling candy bars or other goods and services. Some leagues hold golf events or car washes for the same purpose. There are also companies offering cards that include discounts to local merchants that a youth sports league can sell to earn money to help cover costs.
