Muscle Milk is the registered trademark of CytoSport Inc., of Benicia, California. Muscle Milk is the brand name for CytoSport's line of protein supplements that includes mix-and-drink powders, ready-to-drink nutritional shakes and snack bars. Tailored for the general public, Muscle Milk is featured at convenient retail locations. CytoSport offers additional product lines for athletes and body builders.

  1. Liquid Muscle Milk

    • Liquid Muscle Milk is the Ready-to-Drink (RTD) nutritional shake available in 11,14 and 17 ounce single-serve containers. Muscle Milk Light Ready-to-Drink is the sugar-free alternative that still features the beneficial carbohydrates and fats to work with the twenty grams of protein, with about 170 calories, depending upon the flavor. Shawn Phillips, creator of Full Strength brand of nutritional shakes has concerns regarding RTD formulations as “additives and preservatives that must go into a ready-to-drink nutritional shake so it can safely sit on a shelf at room temperature for 2 years or more”.

    Recommended Use

    • Drinking a single serving of Muscle Milk “prior to training provides the caloric energy needed for intense workouts.” After workouts, Liquid Muscle Milk aids in the body's recovery process, and is suitable as meal replacement, according to CytoSport. Each serving is a good source of potassium, vitamin C, B-vitamins and minerals. Liquid Muscle Milk has a rich and smooth texture that is easily blended with frozen fruit or juices to create high protein smoothies or frozen beverages.

    Milk Proteins

    • CytoSport designs its formulas with milk based proteins of calcium and sodium caseinate, milk protein isolate, and whey to benefit muscle growth and repair. TheMedicalNews quotes Stuart Phillips of McMaster University regarding its study comparing skim milk to soy protein as, “milk proteins are a superior source of protein in producing muscle mass.” The reason is believed to be the two main types of proteins in milk, whey and casein, that “may have intrinsic properties that are advantageous in terms of supporting muscle growth.”

    Beneficial Fats

    • Consumers are often initially concerned about the 14 percent fat content per serving for Liquid Muscle Milk, especially when comparing to the 11 percent for Myoplex by EAS that only contains sunflower oil. Liquid Muscle Milk is formulated with Trans-fat free Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), necessary fats beneficial to protein metabolism and cellular repair within the muscle. Jim English and Dr. Ward Dean of Nutrition review confirm that MCT's aid in weight-loss, appetite control, boost immunity and have possible anti-aging benefits.

    Cost of Convenience

    • Liquid Muscle Milk is more costly when purchased individually in the refrigerated case of retailers compared to the mix-and-drink powder. Prices vary by location starting around $3.69. For a fair cost comparison, both products are available at GNC stores nationwide and online. As of July 2010, a 2.47 pound container of Chocolate Milk flavored Muscle Milk powder with fifteen servings sells for $49.99. Twelve 14-oz. individual servings of Chocolate Malt flavored Liquid Muscle Milk sell for $39.99. The cost per serving of each formulation is only $3.33, with the powder offering a few more grams of protein per serving. Myoplex RTD when purchased from GNC costs $4.16 per serving, however it does contain an additional fourteen grams of protein compared to Liquid Muscle Milk.
