Distribution Clerk Job Description


A distribution clerk is in charge of receiving orders, preparing them and dispatching them to their destinations. He also receives stock in the warehouse and keeps inventory. He is responsible for ordering materials and supplies that are necessary for running the activities in the warehouse. He also liaises with vendors or other distribution agents and packages goods for distribution. Generally a distribution clerk is the custodian of the warehouse.


  • Formal training is not a must since this is a hands-on job. Hence, a distribution clerk should have basic clerical training or knowledge of office functions. The candidate should have at least six months experience in performing warehouse duties or any clerical duties.

Desired Skills

  • He should be able to clearly understand instructions both written and oral. He should be a fast learner. He should have the ability to create and maintain healthy working relationships with other people. He should be knowledgeable in basic warehouse procedures like receiving and storing. He should be able to keep records. He should be computer literate and able to create computer based spreadsheets. He should also have prior experience in computer software and systems relevant to warehousing. The distribution clerk should be able to carry out basic inventory duties and have the aptitude to carry out basic computations in arithmetic. Again, the distribution clerk should be able to carry out both alphabetic and numeric filing.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • He is responsible for sorting orders from clients and packaging them for transportation. He organizes delivery of supplies to clients. He updates the store records and does the warehouse inventory and orders for stock when necessary. He is responsible for ensuring that supplies and orders are in good condition and that documents are accurately filled out. The distribution clerk prepares labels and lists of goods to be delivered. He is in charge of sorting out materials and arrangement in the warehouse. He supervises other warehouse employees. He is responsible for creating good working relationships with clients and employees within and outside the organization.

Working Conditions

  • A distribution clerk should be ready to perform physically engaging duties. He should be able to stand for long durations. He should have good hand/eye coordination and be able to operate warehouse equipment. He will be required to lift heavy objects or materials. According to the San Diego County Office of Education, a distribution clerk should be able to lift objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
