Self-Defense Training for Law Enforcement
Self-defense is an essential part of law enforcement, since those working in this field are usually exposed to dangerous situations on a daily basis. Self-defense training can take the form of gun training or hand-to-hand combat. It is not uncommon for law enforcement officers to take classes in martial arts.

Gun Training
-
Police academies teach law enforcement officials how to handle and effectively use guns. Besides this, many law enforcement officers train to become more proficient with their firearms using other means. According to Nrahq.org, the National Rifle Association has a branch for law enforcement officers that certifies them to teach firearm safety to the public.
Filipino Martial Arts
-
According to Spartancops.com, Filipino fighting styles, such as Arnis de Mano and Doce Pares, are common in the training of law enforcement officers. These fighting styles are useful in that they teach many restraining maneuvers, including holds, chokes, and joint locks that can be used in the field. However, it is often hard to find genuine instructors of these styles.

Jiujitsu
-
Jiujitsu is a Japanese fighting style that has elements useful for law enforcement. The advantage of this style is that it is very common and instructors are easy to find. Jiujitsu covers many holds and grappling moves that can be used to subdue criminals. However, jiujitsu does not commonly teach how to defend against weapons like knives.
Aikido
-
Aikido is the art of using the force of your opponent against them. This is especially useful for officers of smaller stature who may face heavier, stronger criminals. Aikido also teaches defenses against knife and stick fighting, which is useful if a law enforcement officer becomes disarmed in a conflict. However, due to the dangerous nature of many of the moves in aikido, most schools do not allow students sparring to use pressure in their attacks. Police officers wanting to learn aikido may have a hard time applying their skill in real-life situations.
Police-Specific Martial Arts
-
According to Jadedragon.com, the Police Martial Arts Association, founded in 1993, is aimed at developing fighting styles that help law enforcement officers keep the peace. This is an important step in law enforcement self-defense, since police work requires the use of mostly non-deadly, defensive and restraining maneuvers taken from many different martial arts.
