The Brazilian keratin and Japanese hair straightening treatments are considered "permanent" but, as with permanent hair color, the hair will return to its normal state in two to three months after keratin treatment or up to six months after the Japanese treatment. Hair relaxers need to be applied every six weeks. The use of a flat iron is not a permanent solution, as the next time the hair is washed, it will return to its natural state.
