Sydney Football Stadium Facts
Sydney Football Stadium is used for both soccer and rugby matches. It is located in Sydney, Australia's Moore Park in the eastern section of the city. The stadium, though primarily home to sporting events, has also been the site for many large-scale concerts featuring acts such as U2 and Robbie Williams.

Sydney Football Stadium opened on January 24th, 1988, according to its official site. The project cost $68 million AU to complete. One of the goals when building the stadium was configuring the seats so the audience could get as close to the field as possible. Before the construction of the stadium, soccer games were held at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Sydney Football Stadium is home to a grass field. It is owned by the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust and took two years to complete building. The stadium can seat up to 45,500 fans. In 2000, $2 million more was spent to reconstruct the playing surface. Since its opening, new video screens and other features have been added to the park.

Numerous Australian professional sports teams call Sydney Football Stadium home. These teams include rugby league team Sydney Roosters and rugby union team New South Wales Waratahs, as well as soccer team Sydney FC. The National Rugby League's West Tigers also play games at the stadium.

In 2003, Sydney Football Stadium hosted some of the matches in the Rugby World Cup, drawing an attendance of 168,948 spectators over five games, according to the stadium's official site. Among the games hosted were Argentina vs. Romania and Ireland vs. Namibia. However, the record crowd came in 1993 when 43,967 came out to see Argentinian soccer legend Diego Maradona when his team played Australia in a World Cup qualifying game.
Live Earth

Sydney Football Stadium is also famous for hosting the Australian portion of Live Earth in 2007. These were 24 hour concerts held on seven continents to raise awareness of the climate crisis and global warming. Among the bands that played the Sydney show were Crowded House, Jack Johnson and Wolfmother.
