A search engine optimization (SEO) specialist is a website professional who works to increase websites' visibility on Internet search engines. SEO specialists may work as consultants, helping various clients improve their websites, or in-house for a company or organization.

    • Search engine optimization is the process of optimizing websites for search engines such as Google and Yahoo. By obtaining top positions on search engines, a person’s website visibility is enhanced, driving more traffic to the site and increasing the number of viewers.

    Job Duties

    • Specific job duties of an SEO specialist may vary by position. For example, some SEO specialists may have experience in several aspects of search engine optimization, while others may focus on SEO copywriting or keyword research. However, duties that may fall within an SEO specialist's job description may include analyzing, reviewing and making changes to websites so they are optimized for search engines; developing original content to include key phrases and effective headlines to receive increased traffic; and testing various search engine marketing techniques and web designs.

      Furthermore, this position often liaises with various clients and departments. Duties may include strategizing ways to improve optimization and explaining the need for changes to an existing site.

    Qualifications

    • Employers typically seek a bachelor’s degree and one to three years website experience. Previous SEO experience is desired. Knowledge of HTML, CSS and other common programming languages, as well as Microsoft Office may also be required.

    • In addition to education and prior experience, there are a number of personal attributes employers may seek when hiring an SEO specialist. These include strong writing skills, analytical thinking, interpersonal and communications skills.

    • According to PayScale.com, as of July 2010, the average salary of an SEO specialist ranges from $32,000 to $54,000. This may vary by employer type, location and years of experience. For example, an SEO specialist with one to four years experience averages $34,000 to $50,000, while those with five to nine years experience average $44,000 to $68,000.
