Halo 3 Lighting Tricks

Taking screen shots in video games is not a new feature, but with the addition of Halo 3 and its "Theatre" feature, taking screen shots of in-game action has never been easier. You can take screen shots and place them in "File Share," through which you can share the screen shot with other gamers and even upload the file to Bungie, the Halo's developer's website. The most popular screen shots are usually quite simple, but with changes to the lightning with in-game items to get a special effect.

  1. Explosion Lighting

    • Lighting effects have great potential for your screen shot, because they can change the overall look and feel of the photo. Changes to the lighting using in-game items can give a fire illusion, darkness, anger or a variety of other elemental or emotional textures to the photos. To get the best lighting effect, take the screen shot from inside an explosion or angle it so the subject is in front of an explosion to create contrasts. The effects that are specific to certain maps will affect the entire map, so the position of the camera does not really matter.

    Grenades

    • Using Halo 3's four grenade types is a way to change the lighting around a scene. Regular grenades will give off regular, orange/white explosions. Flame grenades and spike grenades give off an orange effect, while plasma grenades will give off a blue lighting effect. Angling the camera so it is inside the grenade explosion, or the explosion is behind the subject of the screen shot, will give off an orange or blue lighting effect.

    Weapons

    • Some of the weapons in Halo 3 can also create lighting effects. The rocket launcher's explosion is similar to a regular grenade explosion, except much bigger and brighter. A fuel rod cannon will cause a large, green explosion, while a Spartan Laser will create a long, red beam. The Scorpion tank and the Wraith can create very large orange or blue explosions respectively.

    Effects

    • The legendary map pack, which consists of "Avalanche," "Blackout" and "Ghost Town," contains special effects which players can access through the "Forge" game mode. When playing Forge, players can add items and scenery to a map. The effects that players can add in are "Nova," which creates a light fog; "Pen and Ink," which changes the map to black and white, as well as a bit misty; "Olde Timey," which is like a 19th century photograph; "Color Blind," which turns the map black and white; "Gloomy," which darkens the map; and "Juicy," which changes the contrast of colors, turning them darker. Using these effects to take screen shots can give the image a new feel, as well as a clean look.

    Combining Effects

    • You can combine the special effects included in the Legendary Map Pack to enhance screen shots further. For example, combine "Olde Timey" and "Juicy" to create an effect which looks especially like a sunset. "Pen and Ink" and "Juicy" together create a very dark, Gothic looking effect, with very little color besides black, gray and white.
