Float Tube Safety
Float tubes allow anglers to fish in areas that are otherwise hard to reach by slowly transporting them to an area away from the bank. It is crucial to be aware of specific safety precautions to help lower your risk of being involved in any accidents or receiving injuries. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Float Tube Distance
-
Being aware of your distance from the shoreline at all times can help keep you safe while using a float tube. Staying close to the shoreline where water is no deeper than 16 feet is the safest distance to travel. This will ensure that if your float tube begins to deflate, you can reach the bank of the river safely.
Personal Flotation Devices
-
The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators reports that, in 90 percent of drowning cases, people were not wearing life jackets. Because float tubes require anglers to float on a body of water away from the bank, a personal flotation device can lessen the chance of becoming a victim of drowning. The life jacket should be worn at all times when you are away from the shore.

Personal Safety Equipment
-
Safety equipment can be purchased to protect your body from the extreme elements while using a float tube. A common injury while on a float tube is burning of the eyes. Because the sun glares off the water during the day, you should use a strong pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes. Other safety equipment can include hats, sunscreen and gloves that can protect you from the sun’s rays.
Float Tube Repair Kit
-
If you fishing journey takes you to a middle of a lake or larger body of water, a float tube repair kit can increase your safety. All float tubes come equipped with a repair kit. Some float tubes made out of rubber can be repaired with a simple bicycle repair kit.
Visual Inspection
-
Before fishing, visually inspect all areas of the tube to determine it is in good working order. Check the tube’s valve area to ensure there are no small leaks or abrasions that slowly leaks air out of the unit. Testing your float tube before arriving at your fishing destination is a great way to make sure it stays inflated.
