After providing a valid I.D. card, both parties sign the license in the presence of the county clerk. Acceptable identification includes: a current driver's license, state I.D. or passport. Some states may also accept a birth certificate, naturalization papers or a life insurance policy. Most states also prohibit the marriage of blood relatives under the age of 50. Additionally, impaired judgment or inability to prove sufficient mental capacity of a consenting adult will hinder the granting of a marriage license.

Most states require a cash payment. After completing the application process, many states also mandate a one to seven day waiting period before a wedding ceremony is performed. However, waiting longer than 60 days to get married may result in a voided license.
After the Ceremony

Just signatures away... Once the marriage ceremony is completed, the paperwork must be signed by the officiant and two witnesses. Often, the best man and maid of honor are asked to perform this task. The officiant will submit a copy of the license to the county clerk's office to complete the process.
