Inspiration
-
Various paper Choose a pattern from a website or look through paper-craft books and magazines for design inspiration. Check your local library first to cut costs. Some patterns are simple to make and some are very creative requiring many steps, but most can be made in two or three easy steps. You will find a variety of size patterns online, some that can be scaled up or down on your computer.
If you are not sure which one will work best for your project, make several samples first and then decide on the best design or choose several patterns so no two are alike. Be creative if you don’t find one that exactly suits your needs by designing your own or combining several techniques to create a Valentine basket that has your own special touch.
Papers
-
Red heart paper craft You can use cardstock, scrapbook paper and construction paper just to name some to choose from. Cardstock will be the sturdiest and probably the easiest to work with for a simple design. Personalize it by printing your design on it before cutting it out. Scrapbook paper is not as strong but will work very well for the basketweave or heart-shaped basket project. Follow the instructions on the pattern and help little ones with cutting strips of paper. Use paper ribbon and raffia for a traditional coiled basket.

Colors and Patterns
-
Gift card Pink, red, white and purple are all classic Valentine's Day colors. Use materials in these colors as well as florals and designs featuring hearts. Metallics add an elegant touch as well.
Embellishing
-
Embellishments Most patterns require simple gluing making this a last minute project. Embellish with hearts, glitter, paint, gems, pictures, lacy paper doilies, and a gift tag.
Goodies
-
Fill each basket with an assortment of treats, messages and mementos of all kinds. Customize each one with their favorite candies or sentiments. For family and friends make theme baskets of their favorite things such as chocolates, all red and white items or romantic items for two. For kids add toys, stuff animals, a sweet treat and a valentine card. For coworkers and friends put in personal size lotion, hand sanitizers, tissues and coupons for lunch. The possibilities are endless.
