About Private Security
Persons or companies that offer security services customize their methods to fit each client's situation. Their main goal of private security is to prevent a dangerous situation from occurring and reacting appropriately if it does. A private security officer protects against activity such as theft, vandalism and terrorism.

Function
-
A private security officer protects people or property. He may protect records, merchandise, money or equipment. Though we find private security in different settings, each worker serves the same basic purpose: to prohibit detrimental activity from occurring to the person or thing he is protecting. Though he may or may not carry a firearm, his mere presence acts as a deterrent to criminal activity. A private security person may work directly for the organization to which he provides security, he may work for a security company who contracts to businesses or organizations, or he may offer his own services as a private security guard.
Types
-
One of the most recognized type of private security officer monitors activity in businesses such as department stores, hospitals and banks. A bodyguard provides security to a single person, protecting him from kidnapping, assassination and assault. A private security person working “static” stays in one location for a period of time, while a guard on mobile patrol may walk or drive to different locations. He may wear a uniform or dress in plain clothes.

Services
-
Often a security officer working in a stationary position may monitor alarms or closed-circuit TV cameras. He may also use metal detectors or identification equipment to screen people entering a secure area. A private security officer may offer services such as vehicle and bomb inspection or provide protection for the transportation of merchandise. An employer may request that a private security worker or organization check the credentials and background of a person with whom they conduct business. In areas with large groups of people, a private security worker may provide crowd patrol and direct traffic.
Requirements
-
When hiring a guard or officer, companies offering private security services seek an employee who can pass a background check, criminal records check and fingerprinting. The company may also conduct drug screening at any time to make sure the worker is not consuming an illegal substance that may impair his reactions or judgment. Most states require licensing for security guards. If a private security officer carries a firearm, he may need additional permits and training.
Considerations
-
A private security officer does not have the same authority as police to make an arrest, but he can make citizen’s arrests by detaining a criminal until police arrive. Private security concentrates on specific companies and individuals, allowing municipal police officers to focus on protecting society as a whole. Some retired law enforcement workers and military personnel use the experience gained during their careers to secure a position in private security. Some officers also have completed coursework in the field of criminal justice
