King-size beds have four different names, even though there are only two types. An eastern king is also known as a standard king. A western king is also known as a California king. Standard and California king are the most recognizable.
Standard King Dimensions

A standard king-size bed mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. This is equivalent to two twin-size beds put together. A standard king is 16 inches wider than a queen-size bed. However, a queen-size bed is the same length as a standard king.

California King Dimensions

A California king-size mattress is 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. This type of bed is not as wide as a standard king and is only 12 inches wider than a queen-size bed. But it's four inches longer than a queen-size bed.
Sheet Size

Flat sheets are the same for both the standard king and California king beds. They measure 108 inches by 102 inches. Comforters are also the same for both types of king-size beds. Comforters measure 100 inches by 90 inches. Fitted sheets, however, are different depending on the type of king-size bed you have. A standard king's fitted sheet will measure 76 inches by 80 inches, while a California king's fitted sheet will measure 72 inches by 84 inches.

Because of its width, those needing extra sleeping room might consider a standard king-size bed. Those who are taller might prefer a California king-size bed.
