Fiji Climate & Weather

Fiji Climate & Weather thumbnail
Fiji weather is balmy, warm and dependable.

Light cotton dresses, tropical drinks and beach-side lounging are perfect occupations for Fiji travelers and natives alike. With its temperate South Sea climate, Fiji’s weather is primarily composed of tropical breezes, warm days and balmy nights, with little variation.

  1. Temperature

    • Fiji is located in the South Pacific, where the tropical maritime climate means that temperatures vary little from day to day. The differences in the average winter and summertime temperatures are also small. The average summer temperature in Fiji is 88 degrees Fahrenheit. The average winter temperature in Fiji is 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures can drop, however, in the winter months to as low as 64 degrees Fahrenheit, and climb in the summer months to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Seasons

    • Fiji’s seasonal calendar is a reversal of that of the Northern Hemisphere. Because the temperatures in Fiji are relatively constant, there is only a winter and summer season. Fiji’s winter season falls between May and November and is typically less humid and rainy than the summer season, which falls between December and April.

    Rainfall

    • Rainfall is more common between the summer months of November and April. On average, throughout the winter months, rain comes in short bursts that disperse quickly. The average monthly rainfall from November to April is 12.5 inches, and 7.5 inches between May and October.

    Wind

    • Trade winds blow east to southeast over Fiji, regardless of the season. They are typically light and breezy, growing marginally in strength between May and November.

    Weather Phenomena

    • Fiji is located in an area of the Pacific that is occasionally crossed by tropical cyclones. Strong, destructive cyclones are a rarity in Fiji, occurring an average of 10 times per decade. These are confined to the months between November and April, usually occurring between January and February. Flooding may occur in the wake of a cyclone, or on a small scale throughout the wet, summer season.

    Preparation

    • Because Fiji is home to desirable weather and a temperate climate, travel is easy and ideal during any month of the year. When planning a vacation, it is important to base the time of year you travel on your reasons for going. Surf conditions, for example, may be more ideal in November, the Fijian summer, when rain is likely, but leisure vacations are more appropriate during the Fijian winter. Travel between December and April requires rain gear. At any time of the year, light clothing and swimwear is appropriate.
