Online Asbestos Training
Although asbestos is no longer used in newer buildings, asbestos training for those who work in construction, repair, demolitions and renovations of buildings built before 1973 are still at risk for asbestos-related illnesses such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. Additionally, because there is no safe level of asbestos exposure, online training courses instruct students on the hazards of asbestos in the workplace as well as safe handling procedures to reduce and minimize asbestos exposure.

Potential Students
-
Online asbestos training is designed to provide individuals employed in construction, custodial and maintenance positions, property or apartment managers and homeowners the tools to learn asbestos handling procedures and the dangers of asbestos exposure. There are no prerequisites required to enroll in an online asbestos training program, and once enrolled, most online asbestos training courses can be completed within a few hours and at your own pace.
Course Description
-
Non-specialized online asbestos training instructs enrolled students on how to locate asbestos in buildings, the health effects of asbestos exposure, worker protection programs, recognition of damaged and deteriorating asbestos contaminated materials, proper asbestos work related practices, as well as federal, state and local asbestos laws and regulations. Additionally, non-specialized online asbestos training instructs students on proper handling and disposal of asbestos contaminated materials, worker decontamination as well as protective clothing use and handling procedures.

Specialized Asbestos Training Courses
-
Unlike non-specialized online asbestos training courses, specialized online asbestos training courses focus on specific work-related practices and procedures involving specialized asbestos handling. Additionally, specialized online asbestos training refresher courses support required continuing education credits for those who work in specialized areas of asbestos handling in order to maintain asbestos handling certification. For example, there are online asbestos training refresher courses for building inspectors, management planners and project designers who also require asbestos training and certification.
Program Standards
-
There are several websites that offer online asbestos training. Before enrolling in any online training course check to see if the asbestos training program meets Environmental Protection Agency, Occupations Safety and Health Administration and Asbestos Hazard and Emergency Response Association standards so that your certification will be valid at any job site. Additionally, some online asbestos training programs offer combined course pricing if you are interested in enrolling in two or more types of online asbestos training at the same time.
Pricing
-
The price for online asbestos training programs depends on how specialized you wish your certification to be. For example, pricing as of 2010 for non-specialized online asbestos training was listed as low as $20 per course and can be up to several hundred dollars depending on how much training and course materials are included in the program. However, specialized online asbestos training refresher courses can vary between $75 and $125 per course.
Considerations
-
Most online asbestos training courses can be completed entirely online without the need of additional in-class or practical skills training. However, there are some websites that offer online asbestos training that do require some hands on skills and practicum training in order to complete the program. Before enrolling in any online asbestos training program check to see if that program can be completed entirely online via telecourse and/or email before enrolling in the course.
