Maya software, originally created by Alias-Wavefront, is a digital production program used for film, game design and web multimedia production. Both multimedia professionals and students use software like Maya for animation or special effects.

  1. Early Maya

    • Alias-Wavefront introduced Maya software in 1998. It was innovative in its ability to create lifelike characters and produce state of the art special effects. Many popular production studios, including DreamWorks, were among the BETA testers of this version of Maya.

    Versions

    • Alias-Wavefront came out with an upgrade in 1999 called Maya Complete, and later that year they expanded on this version with Maya Unlimited. In 2006 when Alias was sold to Autodesk, the modern version of Maya was created and named Autodesk Maya.

    Maya 2011

    • The 2011 version of Maya has expanded upon its previous ability to create believable character animation, with features like better skinning tools, new pre-visualization tools and better color management. Additionally, its layout is more user-friendly to allow faster creation. The creators also state that its new design reduces eye-strain and improves productivity.

    Uses

    • Maya software was used to produce many popular games and movies, including Madden NFL 2001, Stuart Little, The Matrix, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and the Final Fantasy film. More recently, the software has been used to create Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda, South Park, Resident Evil and the best-selling game, The Sims.

    Awards

    • Maya software has won 12 awards since 2001, including Editor’s Choice Awards and the Scientific and Technical Achievement Academy Award. Additionally, Maya software was used to produce winners and nominees of the Best Visual Effects Academy award, such as Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Spiderman.
