The Difference Between Full & Twin-Sized Beds

Full-size bed

When comparing a full size-bed and a twin-size bed, you need to know the size of the beds, the sleeping room per person on each bed and how the placement of the bed, or beds, in your room.

Width

The twin-size mattress, which is also called a single bed or a standard twin, is 39 inches wide. The twin extra long mattress is 39 inches wide, as well. The full-size bed, also known as a double bed, is 54 inches wide.

Length

The length of a standard twin bed is 75 inches, and the length of the twin extra long is 80 inches. The full-size bed is 75 inches long.

Sleeping Room

Although full-size beds are wider than twin beds, the sleeping room per person on the former is less than that of a twin bed. The twin bed gives one person 39 inches of sleep room, whereas the full-size mattress gives two people each only 27 inches of sleep room.

Room Fit

The twin bed fits into a smaller bedroom. Dorm rooms commonly feature twin beds, because they often must accommodate at least two people, with two beds, two desks and two dressers. Dorms commonly have the twin extra long beds to accommodate the height of any person.

Placing a full-size bed in a small bedroom reduces the empty space for dressers, walking room and additional needs.

Bedding

The bedding for a twin-size bed is cheaper than the bedding for a full-size bed. The exception is the twin extra long bed sheets, which are hard to find and more expensive than the standard twin bed (some brands can be more expensive than full-size bed sheets).
