DMV Tag Information for Pinellas County, Florida
Florida State law requires that all automobiles, trucks, trailers, boats, vessels, motorcycles, motor homes, recreational vehicles and mobile homes be properly registered and display a valid tag while in operation. As a statutory agent for the Florida Division of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles, the Pinellas County Tax Collector is responsible for issuing and renewing these tags, as well as collecting any appropriate sales tax.

Vehicle license tags can be renewed for one or two years. Tag renewal dates coincide with the registered owner's birthday and must be renewed by midnight of that date. Tags can be renewed up to three months before the registered owner's birthday.

In addition to the standard Florida state license plate design, vehicle owners can also choose from a variety of specialty tags that highlight environmental issues, professional and college sports teams, the military, law enforcement, health care, education and various other designs. Tags for disabled drivers or those who require special equipment are also available.

Vehicle insurance is required to obtain a tag. To purchase or renew a tag, Florida law requires that all motorists present proof of valid property damage and personal injury Insurance. This law applies to any self-propelled motorized vehicle with four or more wheels. Two-wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles and non-motorized vehicles such as trailers and mobile homes are excluded.

Pinellas County Tax Collector offices are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. These offices operate on the county government calendar and are closed on weekends and designated holidays.
Online Services

Vehicle tag renewals or transfers can be processed online, via the Pinellas County Tax Collector website. To utilize this service, vehicle owners must verify their Social Security number and pay with a major credit card. There is also an additional fee for using this service. Specialty or personalized license tags cannot be ordered or renewed online.
