Club Chair Styles
At one time a chair was just a chair. But as arms were added and padding was added, a chair became much more. It became something personal; a reflection of style and an item of comfort rather than just a functional piece of furniture in a room. Club chairs are so named because they were originally found only in clubs where men would gather with their other male friends and smoke and drink and relax in their padded leather seats. Club chairs have come back in style as all things do, with many styles to choose from. Does this Spark an idea?

Original Design
-
The original design of the club chair was a straight back leather chair with deep buttons in the leather. Though other fabrics can be used to upholster a club chair, it is traditionally done with leather. The names of the chairs were based on London streets, such as Piccadilly and St. James.
Art Deco Design
-
Club chairs can be expressed very stylishly with an Art Deco Bauhaus design. The ebony wood frame is completed with a high gloss finish, and the leather upholstery in rich crème leather keeps it in line with art deco elegance. The arms are squared off with a low profile making it pair nicely with another one just like it at its side. Whereas the original club chair has English origins, the Art Deco club chair reflects a French influence.

Sleek Shape
-
The Wassily Club chair was originally designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925 and is a club chair that stands out among other club chairs because of its sleek shape. The original inspiration for this chair was a bicycle tube, which is how the polished steel frame evolved. The seat is usually made of leather; however, modern reproductions are also made with synthetic fabrics.
Italian Inspiration
-
Just as French and English were part of the club chair design, the Italian designers influenced the styles of this chair by creating modern lines made ideally for condos and apartments. These tufted chairs are sleek in matte black leather with clearly defined stitching. The chair is finished off with glossy chrome legs.
From Straight to Overstuffed
-
Club chairs can be overstuffed and made to pair with a sofa. The original straight backed chair evolved into this style when the chair moved from a gentleman's club to a family home. The padding on the arms became larger and the back and legs were stuffed into a thicker mass capable of nearly enfolding the person sitting in it. The original frame size became larger to support the increase in padding and upholstery.
Fabric Choices
-
Wood finishes have changed over the years, and the darker more austere colors have warmed up to lighter oaks and walnuts. Upholstery that was once limited to dark brown leather has moved on to fabric in solids and patterns. Some club chairs have even been designed for outdoor living with outdoor fabrics.
