The sun can be fascinating to curious children. Mankind has acquired a lot of knowledge about the sun, and children can benefit from learning about these things, such as size of the sun, distance of the sun and the sun's temperature.

  1. Size

    • The diameter of the sun is around 870,000 miles wide. That is 109 times wider than the earth. It is thought that approximately one million earths could fit inside of the sun if it was hollow. The sun also weights 333,000 times what the earth weighs. The sun has about 98 percent of all of the mass of our solar system.

    Temperature

    • The surface of the sun is called the photosphere. This surface is around 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The center of the sun is about 27 million degrees Fahrenheit. The sun has dark spots on the surface, called sunspots. These sunspots are the cooler areas on the sun.

    Distance from Earth

    • The sun is around 93 million miles from the earth. The earth is considered to be closest to the sun during it's northern hemisphere winter. It takes the light from the sun about 8.3 minutes to reach the earth.

    • The sun is made from 92 percent hydrogen, 7 percent helium and the rest is other gases. The sun is able to burn over seven million tons of gas every second. The center of the sun is made of helium. All of the substances created from the sun are invisible.

    • The sun is only a medium sized star with medium brightness. There are other stars that are bigger or brighter, and some that are smaller or fainter. The outermost layer of the sun, called the corona, stretches millions of miles into space. The sun rotates completely once every 27.4 days. The sun turns four million tons of hydrogen gas into energy every second.
