Side Effects of Insomnia From Fosamax

Side Effects of Insomnia From Fosamax thumbnail
Insomia is a common side effect of many prescription medications.

Fosamax is a prescription drug used to treat women who have osteoporosis. Fosamax helps many people to both prevent osteoporosis from beginning and lessen existing osteoporosis symptoms. Although Fosamax has many benefits, like all medications it also does cause side effects in some patients. One common side effect is insomnia.

  1. Osteoporosis and Fosamax

    • Osteoporosis is a medical condition where bones become weak, brittle and break easier than in a healthy, non-osteoporosis patient. Older women are the main victims of this illness, but men are not immune from becoming osteoporosis sufferers. A bone density test is used to determine if an individual has osteoporosis. Osteoporosis patients are encouraged to use Vitamin D and calcium as a way to prevent bone breakage. Fosamax is used to strengthen bone density causing less fractures and breaks in patients.

    Insomnia

    • Although Fosamax is a life saver for many people with bone density problems, some people suffer the unfortunate side effect of insomnia. Insomnia occurs when a person takes a long-time to fall asleep or keeps waking up on and off all night causing a poor quality of sleep. Certain stimulants used in Fosamax and other medications can keep certain patients awake at night. One way around this is to take your medication early in the day. If insomnia still occurs, it is important to find another cure as poor sleep can effect your ability to work, drive and function during waking hours.

    Other Side Effects

    • There are other common side effects of Fosamax besides insomnia. These include, but are not limited to: constipation, nausea, stomach pain and fever. Any side effects that are disrupting your daily routine should be discussed with your prescribing doctor so that he or she can weigh the benefits of this medication verses the side effects.

    Insomnia Treatment

    • A variety of options are available if you are suffering from long-term insomnia. Both over the counter and prescription sleeping pills are available. Melatonin is a natural substance that can be used to help with sleep. Cognitive behavioral theory is another popular insomnia cure for those who do not wish to take any sleeping medications.

    Doctor's Advice

    • When you take any medication, including Fosamax, and you are experiencing a life altering side effect such as insomnia it is always best to schedule a consultation with your doctor if your symptoms last more than a few days. Your doctor can suggest the best solutions including pills that do not counter act with any other medication you are taking or changing the dose of the medicine that is causing the side effect.
