Center directors can work in a variety of organizational settings, from child care centers to elderly residential facilities. Managing big or small entities, these directors are often expected to oversee a diverse list of responsibilities, ranging from the mundane to the critically important. With a solid educational and employment background, a center director can find her job challenging yet highly rewarding and ever changing.

  1. Supervision of Staff

    • Center directors typically supervise subordinate staff and engage in hiring and firing practices when necessary. A director may be required to create staff shift schedules, write job descriptions, advertise employment openings, conduct interviews and eliminate positions. Center directors also may be required to arrange and oversee staff meetings, carry out performance reviews and manage day-to-day employee issues with effectiveness and strong leadership.

    Oversee Budget

    • Budget development and management is often a responsibility of a center director. Reviewing the previous year's actual and anticipated expenses for the next fiscal year, a director may need to create and adhere to a financial plan. In a smaller organization, the center director may also serve the purpose of fiscal manager and bookkeeper, maintaining control of generated income and accounts payable and receivable.

    Program Management

    • A center director often manages programs for the center or organization. Responsibilities may include development of new programs, streamlining current programs and services or eliminating those that are not utilized enough to serve its purpose. The director monitors program data and statistics to review their effectiveness, particularly if government, state or private funding is relied upon to support services.

    General Operations

    • One of the primary responsibilities of a center director is to oversee the general or day-to-day operations of an organization. This may include everything from ordering office supplies to rectifying a dispute between staff or clients. Center directors often take the lead on daily problem-solving, strategic planning and--in smaller organizations--marketing and advertising. Employee background checks, sanctioning vacation time and purchasing new office equipment are often general operating tasks performed by the center director.

    Facilities Management

    • A center director may be responsible for ensuring that the building or office space is secure, clean and safe for staff and clients. On occasion, electricians, painters, plumbers and other service technicians may be needed to complete building repairs. The director is often charged with managing security issues, housekeeping tasks and safety concerns.
