Keeping hands warm while snowboarding

Snowboarding gives you an opportunity to get some exercise, and enjoy time in the snow with friends. For maximum enjoyment, you need protection from the cold, and that includes keeping your hands warm and dry with snowboard mittens or gloves.

  1. Preference

    • Mittens and gloves both have certain features you may find appealing. You may want to purchase a pair of each and try them out while you're snowboarding to find your preference.

    Warmth

    • Mittens will keep your hands warmer than gloves because your fingers are together in one area. With a glove, your fingers are spread apart, and heat needs to be retained in each individual finger to provide warmth to your hands. Mittens with a glove liner inside, and a warmer, waterproof shell, allow you more time to have your hands in the snow without being too cold. You can also take your glove-lined hands out of your mittens for improved dexterity.

    Waterproof

    • Mittens are usually more water resistant than gloves. Mittens have fewer seams, so water is less likely to seep into the mittens. "If you plan to snowboard for years, purchase snowboard gloves that have a highly waterproof fabric such as Gor-tex, which has double, triple-stitched or taped seams, and the palms and fingers are reinforced," advises Snowboarding-Essentials.com. Glove cuffs should be designed to keep snow out of your gloves when you're wearing a jacket.

    Manual Dexterity

    • Because your fingers are grouped together in snowboard mittens, it's difficult to make adjustments to your equipment, retrieve something from your pocket, or pick up an object you may have dropped in the snow. Freedom of movement in a glove allows you to firmly grasp objects that you need to carry, operate your snowboard straps, and easily take lunch money or a piece of identification out of your pocket.

    Combination

    • If you want the the dexterity of gloves and the warmth of mittens, there's a solution. You can purchase gloves with mittens attached, so you no longer have to bring a separate pair of mittens or gloves when you're snowboarding.
