Badminton competitions have no shortage of officials. A referee runs the overall tournament, with a technical delegate also playing an event-wide role in handling major issues that arise at larger events. The Badminton World Federation tournament director takes care of the commercial component. Once a match begins, however, it’s the badminton umpire that assumes the central role and takes responsibility for what occurs between the opening serve and the final point.
Enforce the Rules
A badminton umpire is responsible for the conduct of the particular match to which he is assigned. He ensures that the players follow the laws of badminton, as well as the tournament’s rules and regulations. Umpires keep the score and announce it after every point. They call service faults and lets as warranted. While line judges make the call as to whether a shot lands in or out, when they indicate that they didn’t see the play well enough to make a decision, the umpire is responsible for either making the call or calling a let and having the point replayed.
Badminton umpires also note any incidents of misconduct that occur over the course of the match. Once the match ends, the umpire reports such incidents to the referee. At that point, the umpire’s authority over the situation ceases, as the referee has responsibilities for anything else that might affect the course of the competition.
